Issue 29 2022 Term 3 Week 10 - 21 Sep 2022

From The Principal

The 2023 Secondary School Captains were announced last Friday by the current 2022 Captains, in front of students and staff assembled around Liggins Quad. What stood out was the joy and enthusiasm shared by the current leaders, when announcing the students who would take over their portfolios. There was a wonderful sense of occasion and ownership by the students and celebration from the entire Secondary School.

Congratulations to the Following Students:

School Captains: Daniel Close, Josephine Simpson
Arts Captains: Maya Little, Sebastian Tang
Environment Captains: Matthew Fry, Marina Viese Vivaldi
Service Captains: Simone Franceschi, Charlotte Scamps
Sports Captains: Emelie Bessell, Samuel Chubb

House Captains:
Cowper: Yasmin Coletran, Joe Griffiths
Dumolo: Daisy Oliver, Oscar Whatmough
McDouall: Lachlan Binnekamp, Isabella Havryk
Roseby: Briar Carter, Patrick Walker

A list of the Captains of Activities can be found HERE.

The change of date for the House Spirit Fair was a great success, with wonderful weather last Friday and a fitting celebration to the end of the week. Students enjoyed participating in a range of fun activities, while raising funds for the Yr 12 Legacy Gift and the Means-Tested Scholarship Fund. In a heavily contested competition between students and staff, the staff team was victorious in the Lip Sync Battle.

A key focus for this week has been on celebrating the contribution of our Yr 12 Class of 2022. We commenced the week with a moving and symbolic Chapel Service, during which Callum Wardman-Browne, Aaron Drake and Omar Rihani performed beautiful pieces of music, Amazing Grace was sung with emotion and the final candle lighting ceremony highlighted the School Values students will take with them beyond the School gates. Our new Secondary School Chaplain, Kirsten Philips has had such a positive impact and it was wonderful to have Junior Campus Chaplain, Fiona McKenzie join us for the service, given her strong connection to many of the students.

It was a stunning day on Tuesday for the Yr 12 Harbour Cruise, with students enjoying the opportunity to express themselves by wearing some very creative variations of the school uniform. This was followed by time together at Balmoral Beach and a shared lunch.

The final day of celebration today includes Yr 12’s Final Assembly in Dunnet Hall and their walk through the Guard of Honour from the Junior to Senior Campus, which is something many students have been looking forward to for years. This evening’s Valedictory Dinner will be a fitting finale to the week and a wonderful shared celebration event with parents.

I take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Yr 12 Legacy team for their leadership in raising funds for the Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship. The three initiatives they have undertaken have raised over $14,000 to support providing a Redlands education to a student who otherwise would not be able to attend the School.

With our staff professional development day scheduled for this Friday, today marks the last day of term for students and I wish all families well for the break. May it provide time for connection and rejuvenation.  I look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Monday 10 October.

Head of Secondary School

Farewell Redlanders

We conclude Term 3 today for all students in the Secondary School. It is a particularly special day for our Yr 12 students whose achievements we celebrate at the Valedictory Dinner this evening. Today in Dunnet Hall, we recognised the many contributions and accomplishments of the Class of 2022 in the Farewell Assembly. We heard from our outgoing Student Captains, Yr 12 Advisor Ms Mountain and our Principal, Mr Webber. It was wonderful for the students in Yr 7 to 11 to be able to share in the success of our Yr 12 students and celebrate the final moments of their schooling journey with them. For the first time in a few (pandemic) years, we were able to bring the entire Redlands School community together for the celebratory Guard of Honour.

Yesterday Yr 12 engaged in an Activities Day which commenced with a Harbour cruise and culminated in some fun in the sun at Balmoral Beach. Yr 12 were exemplary, creative in their choice of dress for the occasion and able to have fun and relax ahead of Valedictory and an intense study period prior to the final examinations.

On Monday morning Yr 12 engaged in their Final Chapel at School. This was a really special occasion for the Class of 2022 and led by our Chaplain Ms Kirsten Philips. Afterwards, the students had morning tea on the Fahl Garden.

Last Friday was an extraordinary day in the Secondary School calendar and one that allowed all members of the community, teachers and students alike, to generate some Redlands spirit in the House Spirit Fair. The sun shone down and allowed Yr 12 to offer a range of activities such as chess competitions, face painting, lip-sync battles and dancing in the quad. It was a brilliant afternoon and a well-deserved opportunity for the students to let their hair down and have some fun in name of ‘spirit’.

Prior to our House Spirit Fair, we announced the Student Leadership positions for Term 4 and 2023. School Captains, Portfolio Captains, House Captains and Captains of Activities were announced in Liggins Quad in front of the entire Secondary School. A ceremonial ringing of the Bell was embraced by both Sophia and Jack (2022) and Josie and Daniel (2023). Congratulations to all students named as Captains – they were quickly embraced by the outgoing leadership team to support in the running of the House Spirit Fair!

Community Update

We recognise the vital role our wider community plays in the prosperity of Redlands and remain committed to providing opportunities for feedback on our performance. Thank you to those parents and carers who have already completed the online survey sent earlier this week. Those who are yet to complete the survey may do so here. This very short survey is anonymous, does not collect any personally identifiable information and should only take a few minutes to complete.

It was a genuine pleasure and privilege to be able to attend the Yr 12 Farewell Assembly earlier today. I have been inspired by the resilience and endeavour demonstrated by this impressive cohort of students in their final years at Redlands, closely supported of course by their families and teachers who will share in the celebrations at this evening’s Valedictory Dinner. We look forward to following the journey of our 2022 Valedictorians as our newest cohort of Redlanders.

My thanks to those who donated uniforms, the Redlands Uniform Shop and the ever active and passionate Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) for their collective effort in fulfilling the recent Second Hand Uniform Sale. This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund.

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through Term 3. While we were disappointed to postpone the Spring Fair this term, the RPFA, Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) have all continued to actively engage in bringing our various groups together. For more information on upcoming and term break community events, please visit the RPFA section of Note Day.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful break with your family.

Legacy Gift –  Spirit Fair

Thank you sincerely to Yr 12 students and all members of the Redlands community who have supported this year’s Legacy gift of Class of 2022.  Last Friday was dedicated to the Spirit Fair which provided opportunities for the Senior Campus to get together and celebrate the House Spirit. With everyone’s participation through food and games stalls students raised just over $3,000. Overall including all three initiatives the Class of 2022 raised just over $14,000 getting us closer to achieve our goal to award another means-tested scholarship to an exceptional and deserving student commencing in Year 7 2024.

Congratulations to our 2023 Senior School leaders

A warm congratulations to all of the Yr 11 students who were selected to be a part of the 2023 Secondary School Leadership Team.  I am confident that all our selected captains will represent our cohort with pride and will do a wonderful job leading the senior school and our cohort for the remainder of their secondary school journey. A new tradition of the entire school gathering in Liggins Quad was established, to greet the new Senior Leadership Team for 2023. Our new School Captains, Josie Simpson and Dan Close, rang the Liggins bell to close the celebration, symbolising their readiness to lead the Redlands senior school in 2023.

For the students who missed out on a leadership position,  I encourage them to explore servant leadership and remind themselves of their Prefect title and continue to take up opportunities to lead activities and volunteer for events over the next 12 months.

“A leader is best when people barely know they exist, when their work is done, their aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” Lao Tzu – Chinese Philosopher.

Blackmores Bridge Run

Well done to all the Year 11 students who participated in Sunday’s Bridge Run to raise money for Beyond Blue. A big thank you to Finn Woodward for taking the lead with this initiative.

House Spirit Day Photos

A ‘Strange’ Evening at the Theatre.

Yr 11 English Extension 1 Excursion to The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

This year, the Yr 11 English Extension 1 course has focused on studying ‘Texts and Transformations’, a unit where we have compared different manifestations of the same narrative over time. In doing this, we looked at how these manifestations of narratives can simultaneously challenge and reflect the values of their society.

In Term 2, we studied Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) and Rouben Mamoulian’s subsequent film adaptation Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), unpacking how they each reflect and challenge the social values relative to their respective zeitgeists, and how, comparatively, they illuminate the societal transformations that occurred in the intervening years. While Stevenson exposes the contradictory nature of the upper-class and affirms the fear and fascination of scientific progression experienced by the lower-middle classes of the Victorian era, Mamoulian’s later manifestation highlights the value of money in an American economy in recession and contests the normalised sexualisation of women in 1930s film culture.

In light of this, it was wonderful for us to experience the Sydney Theatre Company’s theatrical production of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, adapted and directed by Kip Williams; we were essentially witnessing another manifestation while having a great night out at the same time!

Having finished our Preliminary HSC Examinations the day before, our small cohort, though exhausted, felt like this excursion was a reward for our hard work. As we left the hazy blur of our examination week, none of us were quite sure what to expect from the production. Certainly, we were not expecting multiple large screens floating around above the stage, two actors, and a black-clad production crew sliding massive props to-and-fro across the stage: all with no intermission.

The incredibly talented actors Matthew Backer and Ewen Leslie fulfilled the primary roles of Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde and Mr Utterson, also making quick costume changes to enter supporting roles. They were followed around by members of the stage crew, strapped with elaborate camera contraptions, projecting different angles of the scenes onto the aforementioned screens. The live footage was integrated with pre-recorded videos, in real time, and I’m still not sure how they did it! It was a dazzling display of contemporary technology, completely unlike anything that we had seen before. There were moments when we could not physically see the actors, hidden behind the wheeled set designs, but they were still visible on the screens that moved in all directions around the space. The effect was an awareness of multimedia in influencing the future of art and literature, and an experimental glimpse into the future of performance. Moreover, the narrative aligned to that of Stevenson’s for majority of the show, momentarily digressing towards the end in a colourful, humorous, modern twist.

The play was moving in its bizarre and unique approach, offering both a traditional but also modern perspective of the narrative. The quality of production was astounding, and the actors’ performance was exceptional; I cannot imagine how tired they must have been at the end! From a studious perspective, it presented the ultimate reflection of a contemporary context; it was high tech, loud, witty, challenging, and exploding with theatrical expertise. It was something you had to experience to believe; it was so extraordinary and definitely the best way for the Year 11 English Extension 1 group to close off a fun year of learning! A BIG thank you from all of us to Mr Bentley and Mr Tod-Hill for organising the event.

End of Term 3 Wrap-Up

Yr 10 have had an exciting, productive, challenging and awareness-building term. On top of a rigorous course load, students have been presented with a lot of information to assist them in navigating responsible decision-making and developing their personal and social awareness even further. Students have experienced a shift in their friendship groups and looked within themselves to identify their true values and their contribution to their cohort and our Redlands community. We look forward to welcoming our Winter School students back to Redlands Sydney campus and sharing Term 3 experiences from both campuses. This is another chance for the cohort to learn from one another, build upon their growth and to support one another in this effort.

Next term, students will return to school with a focus on assessment preparation and completing their Yr 10 Examinations, they will be supported in further developing their leadership capabilities and engage in Yr 10 Camp and they will complete the term on a trajectory moving forward into their senior years.

Holiday Support for Mental Health

While the holidays is a time to relax, spend time with family and friends and feel refreshed for another term, some students may find it challenging to be away from their daily routine and their social connections.  Please see the attached brochure from our incredible Senior School Counsellors for parental guidance in supporting your teenagers during this upcoming break.

Yr 10 Video

As mentioned last week in Note Day by Mrs Van de Peer, Ms Boase and I challenged Yr 10 to step up and express what they believed the Yr 10 cohort needed to hear and experience at this time in the term.  A few students chose to create a video to provide inspiration and focus for Yr 10 as they prepare to enter the senior years of school. Students were extremely engaged in the creation of this video and we would love you to see the advice they collected and shared with their peers here.

Parental Support and Resources

  • Parental Access to Digital Safety Resources

In the new Pulse 2.0, parents can find the Digital Safety option in Quick Links.  The School TV and cybersecurity resources are linked through this option.  From the landing page, parents can choose School TV Home to then navigate by topic in the search bar.  Several resources for parents are at your fingertips, including the resources on parties and gatherings shared in last week’s Note Day.

This webinar by Paul Dillon is for parents and guardians of teenagers who are looking for strategies to help keep their child safe at parties.

Teenage parties provide young people with valuable opportunities to develop a range of social skills that they need to relate effectively with their peers. As they get older, alcohol is more likely to become a part of these social gatherings and, unfortunately, things can go wrong.

This presentation will examine what we know about young people, alcohol, and its use at parties. It will also provide practical strategies and simple tips for parents considering allowing their teen to attend such events, to help ensure they are as safe as possible.

Drug education expert Paul Dillon presented a seminar for Independent school parents in 2017 on teens and alcohol. Here he confronts the fact that parents have to be prepared for their child to sometimes do the wrong thing.

  • Further information from Paul Dillon

For any further questions and/or advice, Paul Dillon can be contacted via the following: p.dillon@darta.net.au and www.darta.net.au

  • Further information from NSW Police on underage gatherings

Next term, students will be hearing from Mr. Brent Sanders in regards to legal implications of underage gatherings, drinking and consent. Linked here is advice from NSW Police about safe gatherings and legal considerations.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Jasmine Black! Jasmine has been selected to play with NSW in the girls’ football National Youth  Championships in Coffs Harbour this week Monday – Friday. The National Youth Championships, run by Football Australia, represents the highest level of competition for our State teams. It provides a pathway and opportunity for NSW players to become identified for any of the A-League clubs and the various National Youth teams.  Best of luck to Jasmine.

Congratulations to Isaac Brooks and Henry Charles who were invited to complete Tuesday 20 September in the NSWCIS Athletics Championships as part of the ISA Team.  Well done to both competitors!

Yr 9 Examinations – Term 4, Week 2.

Whilst taking a moment to enjoy their holidays, students should continue on with their preparations for the Yr 9 examination block. Students will have access to their Examination Timetable by the end of the week. This will be published on Pulse, on the Yr 9 page. It is important that students use this as a guide for their planning and preparation at home. Resources have also been available through individual classes to assist in this process and students have been encouraged to liaise with their teachers over the course of the past two weeks on best practice for each subject.

Redlands My TV – Exam Jitters

Setting a schedule is vitally important. Students need to schedule everything from sleeping and eating, to studying and exercising. It is one of the best ways to manage inevitable exam stress. Students need to look after themselves when they have big demands in their life.

When it comes to productive study, sometimes less is often more. It is recommended that students hit the books in 50-minute stints, broken up by 15-minute breaks. This gives the brain, and body, a rest. Adolescents will often underestimate the amount of sleep they need. Getting enough sleep is key to successful study practices. Research shows that physical activity also has a very positive impact on mental wellbeing. Eating well is another crucial factor to maintaining concentration and staying focussed on the task ahead.

Year 8

Happy Holidays

As we come to the end of another busy and exciting term, I would like to wish our Yr 8 students and families a restful and rejuvenating break. And what a term it has been – it has been so encouraging to see our Yr 8’s embrace new opportunities and cement others, laugh and socialise in the playground and take part in a the full spectrum of activities on offer at Redlands. This level of engagement was abundantly clear at our Year Meeting this week, where an outstanding number of our cohort were awarded Merit Certificates and Pockets for their contributions to the Redlands community.

House Spirit Fair

Last Friday afternoon, Yr 8 students took part in the House Spirit Fair, hosted by the Yr 12 Student Leadership Team. Students enjoyed and competed in many activities including 3v3 Basketball, Chalk Drawing, Dodgeball, Handball and Chess, as well as Lip sync battles and Just Dance. Yr 8 were all smilies, excited by the opportunity to mingle across grades. They took particular delight in the Pie Face Throwing, alongside some incredibly competitive games of Basketball. It was truly wonderful to see Yr8 embrace the afternoon, and to reward themselves after the very busy term.

Year 7

As Term 3 draws to a close, I would like to wish students and families a well-deserved break over the upcoming school holidays. It has been a wonderful term with our Yr 7 students hitting their stride and achieving much in all facets of school life. It has been exciting to watch students embrace new opportunities, most recently in Sport as students trialled for Summer representative teams. A number of our students have joined the Redlands Rowing Program and I have been delighted to hear stories of training sessions and new friendships formed.

Debating

There is much to celebrate in Debating this week. Cowper House won the Yr 7 House Debating Competition. Furthermore, last Friday evening, our Year 7 Debating Team won the SDN Grand Final. The competition was fierce and the arguments were strong. This is such a wonderful achievement, congratulations Elodie Melvin, Felix Elwin, Sophia Liu, Soraya Christian- Hare, Alexander Heller, Ava Atkinson, Gabrielle Bernath. A special thanks to Debating Coordinator and Yr 7 Tutor, Ms Rachel Beggs, who administrated both competitions.

House Spirit Fair

Last Friday afternoon, Yr 7 students took part in the House Spirit Fair, hosted by the Yr 12 Student Leadership Team. Students enjoyed and competed in many activities including 3v3 Basketball, Chalk drawing, Dodgeball, Handball and Chess as well as Lip sync battles and Just Dance. Yr 7 relished the cross grade interactions and the fun atmosphere. It was heartening to see Yr 7 students embrace the spirit of the afternoon.

CIS Athletics

CIS Athletics was held on Tuesday 20, September and the following Yr7 students competed in the NSWCIS Athletics Championships as part of the ISA Team. Congratulations Hugo Burton, Finn Gurney, Milla McKim and Eva Simpson for their selection at this important athletics event.

Gymnastics

Ingeborg Andersen, Amelie Beeton, Charli Amm and Penny Vincent McGovern travelled to the Gold Coast last weekend to represent Manly Waringah at the National Gymnastics Club Competition in trampolining and tumbling. Gymnastics at this level requires a huge commitment of both time and energy and we are incredibly proud of the girls.

Head of Junior School

Thank you to our staff and students for their unwavering commitment to finish a wonderful term of learning and experiences. Many events returned after the COVID-enforced break and it has been joyful to have warmly welcomed parents and families back on to campus for events such as the Junior Music Festival, Student-led Conversations, Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day, Father’s Day Coffee Morning and Gallery Walks.

With the busyness of a school term, it is important to rest and recharge over the break and I wish all in our community a restful and relaxing two-week break ahead of the final term of this year.

Gold Medal Winners: National Ethics Olympiad Champions

We were so excited and proud to hear that our Yr 6 team who competed in last week’s National Ethics Olympiad were awarded the Gold Medal! From an incredibly strong field of schools from across Australia, the team showed great poise and skill, receiving an honourable mention for their ethical theories, arguments and respectful discussion in the judges’ round-up and when the final results were released, Redlands was placed 1st pipping Melbourne Grammar School (VIC) and Haileybury Rendall School (NT).

The Yr 6 team of Felix Davis, Fergus Kerr, Olivia Law, Vivienne Matthews and Lauren Rolfe are to be commended for their impressive application of ethical theory and I also congratulate our Yr 5 team of Azina Garrido Bulnes, Emily Heller, Sophia Moriarty and Jennifer Todd who competed well in the same field of teams that were primarily all Yr 6.

Gallery Walks

We have been delighted to have had parents from Yrs 4 and 6 into classrooms over the last week. I enjoyed talking to many parents about both their children’s learning and how enjoyable it was for them to be back on campus and connected to the classroom learning environment through events such as these gallery walks.

Yr 4 were able to share interactive digital guidebooks to communicate their understanding of the culture of Australia’s neighbouring countries with parents exploring animated population graphs, recordings of common phrases and the use of green screens to highlight landmarks. Thank you also to the parents who supported this morning by sharing delicious and unique dishes for others to sample.

Yr 6 also shared a range of their learning from a diverse range of subjects this term through a range of multimodal medium. Also in attendance was Mr Jimmy Tod-Hill, who will be the Year Group’s Yr 7 Advisor next year. Mr Tod-Hill commented on the quality and range of learning he saw and the enthusiasm he felt from the students as they explained their projects to him. I know Mr Tod-Hill also found the chance to talk to some parents about his pastoral leadership role of the group which will be significant as the Year Advisor follows the group through until Yr 12.

Farewell and Thank You, Yr 12

In this past week, there have been a number of opportunities for the School community to acknowledge and celebrate the final days of our Yr 12 cohort, many of whom a number of Junior School teachers and I remember with great fondness from their time with us a few years ago. I have been able to observe from afar and take pride in the fine young people that they have turned into who will continue to make a difference in the world with the values and character that are simply part of who they are. Growing good people is very important for us at Redlands and in my time here, this has been a constant that I have seen in our departing students.

After a beautifully poignant Final Assembly today, our traditional student guard of honour took place again with every student from Preschool to Yr 6 involved in high-fiving and applauding our departing graduates as they snaked their way up through the campus. Many of the Yr 12 students were moved to tears by this touching acknowledgement and appreciation of them and this was then mirrored as they returned to the Senior Campus with Yrs 7-11 showing equal appreciation of Yr 12’s student leadership this year. I look forward to attending their Valedictory Dinner this evening and also connecting with parents at this event.

The teaching profession is an incredibly privileged one and to witness students grow from young children into Redlands graduates is both humbling and inspiring in equal measures. In some ways, it doesn’t seem that long ago that these Yr 12 students were part of the Junior Campus guard of honour for leaving Yr 12 graduates and as a number of Junior School students mentioned to me today, one day that will also be them. All the very best, Yr 12, 2022.

CISNSW Athletics Championships

Yesterday, 23 Redlands Junior School students represented HICES at the State Combined Independent Schools NSW Athletics Carnival. Simply getting to this level of competition is an exceptional achievement but our talented group of athletes also performed strongly to achieve some notable results. Congratulations to them all and further details can be found in the Junior School Sport section.

Second-Hand Uniform Sale Gratitude

I extend my sincere thanks to the many parents who volunteered to organise and support the Second-Hand Uniform Sale last Saturday. The parent-run group from the RPFA raised a staggering $8,000 towards the means- tested Dr Sue Morey AM Scholarship, which will contribute towards a student being able to access a Redlands education in the future.

Summer Uniform from Term 4

We look forward to welcoming students back to School in summer uniform and as was the case in Term 1, blazers are an optional item of uniform in the summer but will be required for some formal occasions such as Speech Day. Should girls wish to continue to wear trousers in Term 4, this is fine.

Happy Spring Holidays

I would like to wish all our Redlands House and Prep School families a restful spring holiday break. Let’s hope the weather is kind to us so that we can all enjoy some warmer days.

It has been a term with many varied and exciting learning opportunities for our learners and I am so proud of the way that our students have engaged with them all. My wish is that you too have noticed what a fun term it has been and have also been able to see growth and development in your children in all areas of their academic, social, and emotional learning.

I am most proud of the kindness that our children are showing each other throughout the day in all sorts of situations. I notice this when I am in the playground at break times when I witness sharing of equipment, solving friendship challenges, helping each other when a friend is hurt or sitting alone. In the early years, sometimes it can be tricky demonstrating these skills, but I am so impressed at how far our students have come this year after such an unprecedented start to their school journey due to lock downs and COVID worries.

Happy holidays everyone and I look forward to seeing you all Monday 10 October.

Term 4 Reminders and Information

Students return to school on Monday 10 October in their full summer uniform. Please refer to the Student Planner to view the full summer uniform if you are unsure of what this looks like.

As we enter the warmer months, all students MUST always have a Redlands Prep hat on during recess and lunchtime. If your child is wearing a non-Redlands hat, they will be asked to remove it and sit out the break in the shade.

Term 4 Wellbeing lunchtime activities will change with some new initiatives. Please note that Pokémon Club WILL NOT be on in Term 4 as it will be replaced with a different opportunity. This will mean that no Pokémon cards are to be sent to school in Term 4.

Can I please encourage families to have a look at the new Pulse site and familiarise yourselves as to where to find information about OOSH, the after school sport program and other Prep related information. If you cannot find what you are looking for please get in touch so that we can help you.

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Thank you from Mrs Huon

A big thank you to all of our wonderful families at Redlands House for a fabulous third term for 2022! Sailing

Last weekend was the first round of Redlands series for Sailing. It was a glamorous morning of 10-12 knots and sunshine making it the perfect morning for sailing. Before racing, half of the sailors worked on sailing with a spinnaker in Elliott 7s which saw them sail from the club down the harbour to Double Bay and back. The other half of the sailors sailed in Pacers and worked on their steering and sail trim.

In the second half of the session, we held a few short races. This round was assigned as a non-point score round (no races counted towards the overall series) which allowed all our sailors to dust off the winter cobwebs and get back into the swing of racing.

Fitness Centre

With the 2022 ISA Summer Rep. Season literally on our doorstep, the Fitness Centre will still be available to all students across the holiday period. With sessions across Week Two of the holiday period, the Fitness Centre is the perfect space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power.

All students can access the morning sessions which run Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday starting promptly at 7:30am and finishing by 9:00am. These sessions are for all Age-Groups and all Sports, so every student is encouraged to bring a mate along with them to the sessions.

Further details will be sent out via Redlands iLearn.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Rugby 7s

Our Girls Rugby 7s and Learn to Play Program has had a fantastic start with brilliant numbers across all three available sessions. The development across the group has been amazing to see and I cannot wait to see what these wonderful students will accomplish within this sport.

There will be additional Skill / Development Sessions across the second week of the holidays. These sessions will be open to all Age-Groups and are a brilliant way of bringing new students to the sport as well as improving our skill base within the Sport.

Students are encouraged to bring football / moulded boots to this afternoon sessions but runners are fine.

All sessions will be staffed by Redlands Rugby Coaching staff including our Director of Rugby Jack Gooding, our Lead Coach / Touch Football Coordinator Jordy Parsonage and also Wallaroo Piper Duck.

For any questions regarding these sessions, please contact the Director of Rugby Mr Jack Gooding directly on jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Rugby and Rugby 7s is a trial Sport and, as such, will not have any effect on Summer Rep. Sports. For all students wishing to join these sessions, they must understand that priority must be given to School commitments and also Summer Rep. Sport.

Rugby

With the season done and dusted we can now look ahead to not only the 2023 ISA Rugby Season and the preseason preparation, but also, and more importantly, our 2022 End of Season Presentation.

For this year, the Presentation will be held at the Balgowlah Bowls Club on October the 15th. Students, parents and carers are invited to purchase their tickets through the following link.

Purchase Tickets

With Summer Sport Trials starting across the past week, I understand that the last thing on many of our students minds is the 2023 ISA Season but, with dramatic changes to the number of games as well as the competition we will face, preparation leading into the season is key. For the remainder of the term and into Term 4, the Wednesday morning Fitness Session (6:30am – 7:40am) will include workouts prepared, specific to Rugby Union and building up our strength, power and speed. It would be ideal to see as many of our Rugby athletes attend these sessions, especially all students who are wishing to trial for the 1st XV.

Junior School Sport Pulse Student Challenge

With the new Pulse, there is significant scope and flexibility in terms of content, feedback, push notifications. The  new Pulse is aimed at students as well as parents. I spoke with all Junior School students at assembly recently and set them a challenge for them to ‘beat parents’ and clock up more visits to the pages on Junior School Sport. Not only will this enable them to know what they need, where they need to be and what time but this will also alleviate the stress for you having to navigate multiple pages for siblings etc. By encouraging your child to be responsible for their own school sport they will take an active role in managing their time.

It would be appreciated if you can assist with this ‘challenge’ in the coming weeks as both they and you prepare for the start of Summer Sport in Week 1 of Term 4.

Drama and Theatre

End of Term

Thank you to the Redlands Drama and Theatre community for all your support this term. It has been jam-packed with various events that cut across both campuses and am so proud of all the student achievements. We also want to farewell Yr 12 and wish them all the best for their future.

The Addams Family Company Announcement

Congratulations to all who have auditioned. Due to a large number of applications for the 2023 Musical, the company size was capped. The process of selecting the company has been very thorough, with individuals selected based on audition applications and auditions. The quality of these was extremely high and we wish to take the opportunity to thank all students for their level of commitment to the audition process. It was wonderful to witness so many students who have a clear love of the Arts.

Redlands takes to the stage at Manly Jazz Festival!

This Saturday 24 September, Redlands is returning to the Manly Jazz festival stage for the first time in almost 20 years! Join our Jazz Combo at 12:45 at Manly beachfront for their exploration of jazz grooves and improvisation, then wander down the Corso to the Stars of the Future Stage where the Stage Bands will be sharing the stage with our very own Jazz Vocal Ensemble!

Guaranteed to be an amazing day – come support our kids and take in the atmosphere!

PERFORMER NOTE:

As advised, please wear your full Winter uniform including Blazer. The Uniform Shop will be receiving the blazers of Band/Jazz Vocal students for Pockets on the first Monday of Term 4.

Should weather be looking inclement on Saturday morning, advice will be posted via Announcement on the iLearn Ensemble pages by 10am. Please check your email / iLearn on Saturday morning.

We thank them once more for their tremendous leadership throughout their time at Redlands! Go well and stay in touch!
